Poor Thing

An ode to melancholy

Living a lifetime. A cupboard full of memories. When Dowland's melancholic 17th-century lute songs start to play, a magical cabinet of curiosities decides it is time to speak. About objects from days gone by, memories of joyful and joyless moments, about beauty and transience, consolation and sorrow. Slowly the cupboard unfolds and reveals enchanting still lifes. But eventually decay sets in and everything comes to an end. Even a cabinet full of stuff.

In Poor Thing, VOX takes you on a quest for the power of melancholy. In a performance where live music and objects reinforce each other, the spectator is encouraged to be nostalgic and embrace transience; to look more at our surroundings. Because every object you see tells you a story.

Linde Schinkel about Poor Thing
"In times where happiness seems malleable, I want to put a spotlight on melancholy. And because I am a singer who thinks in images, I use the combination of music and objects. With objects you can add countless extra layers to the music. In Poor Thing the audience is affected by the beautiful music and the appearance of objects, touching them with stories from their own reverie.
